Every four years, the United States of America’s top political scientists participate in the Presidents & Executive Politics Presidential Greatness Survey.
The survey asks social science researchers from the American Political Science Association’s section on presidents and executive politics.
The survey asks the political scientists to rank all United States presidents according to their greatness on a scale from 0 to 100. A score of 100 is great, 50 is average, and 0 is an abject failure. The 2018 Survey has recently been released and the nearly 200 top experts ranked President Donald Trump as the worst president in American history.
President Abraham Lincoln was ranked the greatest president in American history. Trump ranked even lower the former President Richard Nixon. Nixon is ranked #33. The top seven presidents did not change from the last survey. The top presidents remain Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower.
Former President Barack Obama jumped 10 places from the last survey up to the #8 president in history, a fact that is sure to irk the president if he actually read research. Donald Trump’s average score on the survey was 12.34. He bumped former President James Buchanan from the bottom spot. Buchanan was president at the start of the civil war.
Researchers who were Republicans tended to view president’s like former President Bush more highly and Democrats tended to view presidents like former President Bill Clinton but both Democrats and Republicans agreed that Trump is the worst.
While he was voted the worst president, he topped another list on the survey. President Trump won the title “most polarising.” Of the 170 respondents, 90 ranked Trump the most polarizing president in history. The next most polarizing president received only 20 votes.
