The FBI and five other law enforcement and intelligence agencies have collaborated for months in an investigation into Russian attempts to influence the November election, including whether money from the Kremlin covertly aided President-elect Donald Trump, two people familiar with the matter said. The agencies involved in the inquiry are the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and representatives of the director of national intelligence, the sources said. Investigators are examining how money may have moved from the Kremlin to covertly help Trump win, the two sources said. One…

Comedian Lewis Black went on The Daily Show this week to poke some fun at President-elect Trump’s upcoming inauguration, which he mocked for lacking any kind of star power. Noting that stars ranging from Elton John to Celine Dion to Garth Brooks all reportedly turned down Trump’s invitation to perform, Black joked that Trump’s inauguration was likely the reason so many music stars — including Prince, David Bowie and Merle Haggard — passed away last year.  “You want to know why so many celebrities died in 2016?” he asked. “It was to get out of playing the g*ddamn inauguration.” Black then went…

During a press conference on Thursday, incoming Trump administration spokesman Sean Spicer was asked why the president-elect has no Hispanics in his cabinet. Instead of answering the question directly, however, Spicer cited several minority cabinet members to show how much President-elect Trump values diversity.  “I think that when you look at the totality at his administration — the people that he’s talked to, the people that he’s met with, the people that he’s appointing — you see a president who’s committed to uniting this country, who’s bringing the best and brightest together,” Spicer said. “Look at the cabinet — Elaine…

Donald Trump has big plans to reduce the federal budget. The Hill reported on Thursday morning that his transition team has been working off a Heritage Foundation blueprint and pulled together a list of government agencies they hope to wipe out. The plans include privatizing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (so long, Big Bird), cuts in nuclear physics research at the Department of Energy, and ending money spent on the historic Paris climate agreement. The National Endowment for the Arts will disappear if Trump gets his way. Trump apparently hasn’t told his Cabinet nominees that they’ll soon be in charge…

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana—Dragging on a cigarette as he sits in the hall of United Steelworkers Local 1999, Robert James says, “Trump stood on stage and lied about 1,100 jobs being saved at Carrier in Indianapolis.” James, 57, is the local vice president and a forklift driver who’s worked for 18 years at the Indiana-based factory that manufactures furnaces for homes. In February 2016 Carrier told more than 2,000 workers at two factories in the Hoosier State they were going to be fired and production would shift to Monterrey, Mexico. After a video of the workers being fired went viral, Trump made…

Minnesota Sen. Al Franken (D) left no doubt which way he will be voting for President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to head the Department of Education, hammering appointee Betsy DeVos for her and her family’s funding on anti-LGBTQ groups and causes. Noting the Michigan billionaire has no background in the educational field outside of attacking teachers unions, Franken directed his most caustic objections at the way she and her family have attacked the LGBTQ community.  “Mrs. DeVos, your family has a long history of supporting anti-LGBT causes including donating millions of dollars to groups that push conversion therapy, the practice of…

Kyle Pope, the editor in chief and publisher of the Columbia Journalism Review penned an open letter to President-elect Donald Trump on behalf of the U.S. Press Corps setting some clear ground rules moving forward. “In these final days before your inauguration, we thought it might be helpful to clarify how we see the relationship between your administration and the American press corps,” the letter starts. Before writing up the list of eight demands, Pope offered background on Trump’s relationship with the media over the course of his campaign and since winning the election.  “You’ve banned news organizations from covering you. You’ve…

As the great H. L. Mencken never actually said, nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public. Television has been proving that point for years, often through pointed man-on-the-street segments that show just how little we, the people, know about, well, everything. The latest evidence comes courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel Live, which set out Tuesday to find out which health-care system more Americans support: Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act. The twist, of course, is that these are two names for the very same system, one that Republicans have pledged to repeal under President-elect Donald Trump—despite the…

Elections are stressful times, “Late Night” host Seth Meyers explained Monday. Most want to take the time after the big day to relax, “listen to some smooth jazz” and happily transition into the Inauguration celebrations. That doesn’t apply to President-elect Donald Trump, however. “Instead, the Trump transition is like listening to a spooky version of ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ that you hear in a horror movie,” Meyers explained.  Meyers said that Democrats have been frustrated with the news that Russians did attempt to have an impact on the election and favored Trump. Meyers said that it was understandable that Rep.…

President Obama on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration, and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous. The decision by Mr. Obama rescued Ms. Manning, who twice tried to commit suicide last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in…
