The Dems are going after Michael Flynn HARD. Turns out, Flynn was paid over $65,000 by various Russian companies shortly before joining the Trump campaign, according to documents obtained and released by Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The congressional investigators made the documents available here.
Russian state-owned TV channel RT — a network that U.S. intelligence officials have referred to as the main propaganda outlet for the Kremlin — “paid $45,386 for Michael Flynn to fly to Moscow to speak at its 10th anniversary celebration in December 2015,” according to Yahoo News.
At the Russian government’s expense, Flynn — who was fired last month as President Trump’s national security adviser — was accompanied by his son, Michael Flynn Jr., on the three-day, all-expenses-paid trip, where they both stayed at the five-star Hotel Metropol in Moscow next to Red Square, according to documents obtained from Flynn’s speakers’ bureau, Leading Authorities.
The Moscow booking was one of three speaking engagements the ex-DIA chief received from Russian interests after being fired from his Pentagon post in 2014 and before joining the Trump campaign as its principal national security adviser.
The two other companies that made large payments to Flynn in 2015 are cargo airline Volga-Dnieper and Kaspersky Lab, an IT firm.
As the Yahoo report explains, the money Flynn received from state-run probably violates the so-called “emoluments clause” in the Constitution, which applies to retired Pentagon officials as well, “prohibiting them from accepting any ‘consulting fees, gifts, travel expenses, honoraria or salary’ from a foreign government.”
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings the ranking House Oversight Democrat wrote the following in a letter to Pres. Donald Trump, Defense Secretary James Mattis, and FBI Director James Comey:
I cannot recall any time in our nation’s history when the President selected as his National Security Advisor someone who violated the Constitution by accepting tens of thousands of dollars from an agent of a global adversary that attacked our democracy.
