A bombshell revelation during the hearing on Russia-Trump ties concerned Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton: The Russians wanted to “hurt Clinton.” FBI Director James Comey flat out rejected suggestions by a few Republican members of the Select Intelligence Committee that Clinton’s campaign could have collaborated with Russians.
In the committee’s hearing on Monday, Comey made it very clear that the intelligence community was aware of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions to help Trump’s campaign.
According to Comey, U.S. intelligence agencies acknowledged in a January report that Putin wanted to undermine former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, all while assisting Trump’s.
Comey said, “They wanted to hurt our democracy, hurt her and help him. Putin hated Secretary Clinton so much that the flip side of that coin was that he had a clear preference for the person running against the person he hated so much.”
Comey added that towards the end of the summer in 2016, the Russians were concerned Clinton would win as polls indicated that “Trump didn’t stand a chance. … So their thinking was, ‘Let’s just focus on undermining her.'”
