Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would retire before the end of his first term, but she going to give President Donald Trump trouble. She has announced that she hired a full slate of clerks through 2020.
At 84, most people assumed Ginsburg would soon step down, but justices planning on retiring usually don’t hire a staff of clerks for the upcoming term.
And this is likely going to upset Trump, who is so impatient to fill the next Supreme Court vacancy that he released the names of potential nominees. Ginsburg is also one of Trump’s enemies, since she criticized him during the 2016 Presidential election.
“I can’t imagine what this place would be—I can’t imagine what the country would be—with Donald Trump as our president,” she told the New York Times. On CNN, she called Trump a ” faker” who has a “really has an ego.”
In response? Trump tweeted this: Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!
“We’re not experiencing the best of times,” she said simply in an interview with the BBC’s Newsnight. She’s hopeful that the “pendulum” will swing back to better times, drawing inspiration from things like the Woman’s March, and the Free Press.
She also points out that the last justice to retire did so at 90, “so I have a ways to go,” though she’s taking it “year by year.” That was in February. After a year of Trump, she seems to have decided to stick it out at least until the next presidential election.
