This is outrageous!!! An 8-year-old boy playing with some teenagers in his back yard in Claremont, NH last month , was violently attacked by older kids and almost lynch him.
The attack happened around 5pm, when the boy was called racial slurs and attacked with sticks and rocks. One of the kids jumped on to a picnic table and grabbed a nearby rope from an old tire swing, according to Lorrie Slattery, the boy’s grandmother.
“The (teenagers) said, ‘Look at this,’ supposedly putting the rope around their necks,” Slattery said. “One boy said to (her grandson), ‘Let’s do this,’ and then pushed him off the picnic table and hung him.”
Slattery says that because no adults were present, she and others had to piece together events from accounts of the children who were there. One of the other kids present was the boy’s 11-year-old sister, who went to get their mother.
According to an interviewer at DHMC, who specializes in child abuse, the boy swung back and forth by his neck three times before finally getting the rope off his neck. None of the teens helped him.
The teens claim it was an accident, and because of that, the police told Slattery that there wasn’t anything they could do.
“If it was an accident, that boy or anybody there wouldn’t have left him,” Slattery said. “I believe it was intentional.”
Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase did say that they take any potential hate crimes very seriously, and though they are investigating an incident involving teens from August, he refused to comment if they were investigating this incident.
It’s unclear, however, if the boy was forced to put the rope around his neck, or if he was playing along before things turned uglier. “I do believe he does not want to believe that he was being hurt purposefully,” Slattery said. “That is the kind of kid he is.”
