Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), a top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, just issued a warning to any potential witnesses in the Mueller investigation in an appearance on NBC’s Meet The Press.
Schiff believed that President Donald Trump and his legal team are “terrified” at what the president’s former Campaign Chairman could tell Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller as part of the plea deal that drops many of the charges that Paul Manafort was facing in return for his cooperation in the ongoing investigation into collusion with Russia and obstruction of justice, Rep. Schiff said that anyone else who could be implicated should come forward sooner rather than later.
“This sends a message to anybody who’s in Bob Mueller’s crosshairs right now, you better get to the special counsel and make your deal right now, because anyone who gets indicted by Bob Mueller goes down.” he said. “The longer you wait to come clean, the worse deal you’re going to get.”
Congressman Schiff’s advice comes with a rationale that the Trump administration would do well to pay close attention to.
“They may think they know what Manafort has to say because he was part of that joint defense agreement, but they have to know that he may not have told them the full truth,” Schiff told Meet the Press.
“They’re terrified of what he has to say,” he continued. “I’m surprised that we are where we are, that Manafort is cooperating.”
The White House has continued to downplay the effect that the flipping of Manafort into a cooperating witness for the Mueller probe will have on the president and his family, but until the details of what his former campaign chief has told Mueller are revealed and what other players who heed Rep. Schiff’s advice may say, we’ll have to wait and see.
